there are moments in our lives that demand our full attention. it’s not even a fight to stay completely focused. we can’t seem to tear our eyes away from whatever it is that’s before us. there are no words for these little spaces of total silence. we are completely aware of our inadequacy to even try to describe the beauty, the absolute magnificence, that we’ve been faced with. to do so would seem to somehow ruin everything. so we stand with eyes unblinking and mouths clamped tight for fear of losing this moment too soon. in these fleeting minutes of time though, one thing stands out more so than others.
i am tiny.
this world is massive. there are mountains that reach the skies, oceans that plunge to unimaginable depths, stars that can’t be counted, sunsets that paint with brilliant colors. this world is endless in it’s awe-inspiring design.
being small terrifies most of us. it makes us uncomfortable. so we work really hard to put things into boxes. to fold them up, make them as small as we possibly can, and put them away. this gives us the illusion that maybe we’ve got this world, this life, under our control. we can make it bend to our will if we push hard enough.
but this world can’t be put into a box because it’s Creator can’t be put into a box.
our God created the mountains, the oceans, the stars, and the sunsets. big things created by an even bigger God.
but the cool thing about this big God, is that He created tiny us. the same God who knows the number of stars in the sky, knows the number of hairs on our head. the same God who knows the depths of the oceans, knows the depths of our heart. the same God who chooses the colors of every sunset, chose the color of our eyes. the same God who created mountains, created our very being in our mothers womb.
yes, we serve a big, powerful God. but He has a big love for us. a love that we could never fit into a box. a love that could never be limited or restricted. a love that consistently pursues us even when we aren’t worth pursuing. a love that offers endless grace to the ugly mess we regularly are. a love that answers prayers we once thought were impossible. a love that is faithful even when we have no faith to speak of.
and when we experience this abounding love, it has our full attention. there is nothing else in that moment that could get us to look the other way. we can’t tear our eyes away from the spectacle before us. we can’t even utter a single word. because this moment is unlike any other that we’ve ever known before.
