In our world today, truth has become something that people view as more of a matter of opinion rather than facts. Everyone has their own truths and they get to decide what those particular truths are. No one else gets to tell them what’s true because that’s infringing on their rights as human beings to be their own person. Today it’s, “Truth is relative,” or, “There is no such thing as truth.”
Except those statements collapse on themselves as soon as anyone chooses to put them to the test.
“Truth doesn’t exist,” is an oxymoron. To utter the very statement proves the one to say it wrong. Because in order for that argument to work, the person has to stand on the belief that it’s true. If truth really doesn’t exist, then how can one be certain that it’s indeed “true”? They couldn’t.
“What’s true for you isn’t true for me,” only stands until two “truths” collide. You say, “It’s okay to lie,” until someone lies to you. You say, “It’s okay to have sex with whomever I want, whenever I want,” until someone cheats on you. You say you don’t believe in absolute truth until it’s time to reprimand someone for wronging you.
So that leaves us with one option – truth does actually exist and it’s the same for everyone. There isn’t anyone who is an exception to that rule.
And the truth comes from one place – or One person to be exact.
1 John 5:20 states, “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.” (NKJV)
Simply put, God Himself is truth.
Truth exists only because God exists.
Without God, there would be nothing. Literally. But outside of the material world, things like truth, goodness, morality, justice, and so many other abstract ideas exist. You can’t have any of it without a Being who is them. If we were an accident, a complete fluke, then there would be absolutely no reason for me to treat others with love and respect. If we came to exist because of random chance, then I have no purpose and neither do you. So why should I care about who you are and what makes you valuable? If you don’t benefit my life then you’re useless.
If our purpose is nothing, then we are nothing.
But, that’s not the case, is it? You know deep down that your life has a bigger purpose than “nothing.” You may not know it, or admit it even if you do, but there is something inside you that whispers, “There is more to this life.”
Because there is.
The purpose of this world, of your life, is to bring God Almighty glory and praise. The purpose of all created things is to recognize the Creator. We were designed to worship God. We were wired to serve and to give praise. Don’t believe me? Look at your life and the things you choose to pour your energy into. The people, the jobs, the things that you revolve your life around will tell you what it is that you’re worshiping. Because that is what you were designed to do. You’ve just been focusing on the wrong stuff. We all are.
Our focus is meant to be God and what He’s done for the human race. I’m not just talking about giving us this Earth and all that’s in it. I’m talking about giving up His one and only perfect Son to be the sacrifice we could never give. That He sent Jesus to pay a debt that WE owed and was never His to pay back. Jesus paid for what was already His.
Jesus Christ was mocked, beaten, whipped with fragments of glass, stripped of His clothes, nailed to the cross through His hands and feet, held the sin of the world on His shoulders, and had His own Father turn away from Him all for the people who would laugh in His face and tell Him that He still wasn’t good enough. All for those who would never be grateful.
God gave His everything so that we might have everything.
That is the gospel truth.
Great post. Well said.
